The Global Merchant Services Technology (GMST) division at American Express is hiring a Software Engineer II to architect, scale, and maintain its next-generation distributed merchant payment platform. Operating in a high-throughput, near-real-time environment, you will build core components for global card transaction processing. The role centers on implementing microservices, managing low-latency data streams, optimizing in-memory data grids, and deploying cloud-native applications. Working inside an Agile framework, you will own features from design to automated unit testing, ensuring 24x7 system availability, fault tolerance, and security alignment.

Requirements:
- Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related quantitative field.
- 3+ years of professional backend software development experience centered around Core Java and enterprise Java ecosystems.
- Strong development proficiency building distributed, multi-tiered architectures using Spring, Spring Boot, Vert.x, and RESTful microservices.
- Hands-on development familiarity with high-concurrency memory computing architectures and processing layers, with Apache Ignite exposure considered a major asset.
- Experience managing and querying data across traditional relational platforms (PostgreSQL), NoSQL datastores (Cassandra), and mass data warehousing systems (Yellowbrick). Practical ability to build event-driven data streams using Apache Kafka or Apache Spark.
- Solid track record writing robust unit tests, configuring mock frameworks, and implementing automated testing practices within an integration lifecycle.
- Strong system debugging skills to trace data bottlenecks, isolate application runtime defects, and apply clear code remediations.
- Active participation in Agile software practices, rapid sprint cycles, code reviews, and technical requirement specifications.
- Proficient oral and written communication skills to articulate technical code solutions against complex financial and merchant business objectives.
